Description

On Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Charité Sunday Lecture invites the public to explore how our internal clock shapes our health. Chronobiologist Prof. Achim Kramer and intensive care physician Prof. Alawi Lütz will share insights from research and clinical practice. Admission is free and open to everyone, and the lecture will be held in German.

When the alarm goes off, the day begins for the larks, while for the owls it is biologically still the middle of the night. Our body follows a complex internal timing system that regulates sleep, metabolism, blood pressure, and the immune system, and even influences how medications work.

Achim Kramer, head of the Division of Chronobiology at Charité, explains how our biological clocks tick, why living against our own rhythm can throw our health off balance, and how circadian medicine brings the factor of time into diagnosis and therapy. Alawi Lütz, senior physician in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, draws on current research to show how strongly the day–night rhythm of critically ill patients is disrupted, and how it can be strengthened again to support their recovery. Many of these approaches can also be used in everyday life to support well-being and prevent illness.
The lecture starts at 2:00 pm in the Lecture Hall of Hörsaal Innere Medizin on Campus Charité Mitte, Charitéplatz 1, 10117 Berlin. On campus, the lecture hall is located at Sauerbruchweg 2; barrier-free access is available via Virchowweg 9.
