Adding Sleep and Circadian Rhythms to Medicine
Abstract
This lecture will present conceptual frameworks for integrating sleep and circadian rhythms into medicine. It will discuss the differences between circadian and daily rhythms and provide examples from clinical medicine.
Short Bio
At Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, Professor Klerman’s work focuses on clinical and biomathematical research, and mentoring in clinical research. Her research includes applying circadian and sleep principles to normal and pathological states and developing mathematical models of circadian, sleep, and neurobehavioral rhythms. Her clinical research investigates circadian and sleep influences in health and disease, including studies in blind individuals, aging, chronic sleep restriction, and the effects of light and darkness on circadian timing. She directs the Analytic and Modeling Unit (AMU), focusing on modeling and simulation of biologicalsystems, developing analytic techniques, and linking experimental and computational research.
