Circadian clocks in the hospital: an opportunity to improve healthcare(?)
Abstract
The circadian system drives daily rhythms in physiological processes across virtually every organ. In this talk, I will discuss several opportunities for integrating our knowledge of circadian biology into hospital settings to improve patient outcomes as well as the health and wellbeing of the many healthcare workers working outside conventional hours. Drawing from studies in night shift workers, newborns, and hospitalized patients, I will illustrate how circadian biology can move from fundamental insights towards practical applications in health care.
Short Bio
I’m a chronobiologist, fascinated by the impact of the circadian timing system on human health and disease. It is my mission to use our knowledge of the circadian system to improve health care: from optimizing the timing of drug administration to creating healthier hospitals environments that are in sync with patients’ circadian clocks.
